Big Joe Egan is Guest Speaker
On Friday 3rd February, 6pm till 7.30pm Break The Stigma and The Movement C.I.C would like to present to you an evening with Big Joe Egan at their Men and Families Support Group....
Joe Egan is a highly sought-after speaker who has also featured in Hollywood films. Nicknamed 'Big Joe Egan' he has fought some of the biggest names in boxing history, such as British legend Lennox Lewis. Joe describes beating the then World Heavyweight Champion Bruce Seldon as the biggest achievement in his life, Joe was quoted saying "It was the best win of my career. I beat him on points in his hometown of Atlanta". Joe possesses a great character with a charming persona, he has fantastic insights into the boxing world but also provides a world of knowledge, this makes him one of the most desirable characters on the speaker circuit.
His boxing career began at an early age and Joe was soon making an impression. After racing through to senior level, Joe moved over to the United States at just 17 years of age. Joe’s talents were recognised by boxing powerhouse Floyd Patterson and he asked him to stay in the country to become the sparring partner for the up and coming heavyweight boxer, Mike Tyson. The pair sparred, trained and lived with one another for two years and became lifelong friends, Tyson eventually went on to be one of the greatest boxers in history.
By just 24 years of age, Joe had won over 80 fights and had an astonishing total of seven Irish titles to his name. He took three times Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis the distance and earned the utmost respect from one of boxing's biggest legends. Joe eventually turned pro in 1990 and won his first two fights.
The proclaimed 'toughest white man on the planet' has overcome some of life's biggest obstacles and often discusses dealing with setbacks, Joe's dreams of continuing as a boxer were cruelly shattered when he was forced to quit following a serious road accident on the night of his second pro fight. Changing fortunes saw him struggle to get his life back on track. His personal life hit the headlines after his former glamorous fiancée Lisa Murphy left him for Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley. The downward spiral continued with a new pub business venture pitting Joe against organised protection racketeers armed with guns, axes and machetes. Joe was shot and later charged with attempted murder. Joe returned in 2004 to boxing, aged 38 for one last fight, he won by technical knockout.
As well as fighting some of the most famous boxing names in the history of the sport, Joe has also featured in a number of films, including Hollywood Blockbuster Sherlock Holmes. Along with roles on TV Programmes such as Peaky Blinders and Brassic. His life experiences make for truly compelling speeches and Joe captivates people wherever he goes.
